As an eating utensil, the spork—a spoon-fork hybrid that is neither functional as a spoon nor a fork—is not great. (Srsly, are there any foods that can be properly stabbed with those lil jaggedy tines?) However, the spork sex position does a much better job of combining two good things.

“The spork is halfway between spooning and sex,” says psychologist Lori Beth Bisbey, PhD, accredited advanced GSRD (gender, sex, relationship diversity) therapist, sex, and intimacy coach.

The spork might sound kind of complicated, but it’s very easy to do. “The receiving partner lies on their back and the penetrating partner aligns their body at a right angle to them. The penetrating partner can remain flat or prop themselves up with one arm, and the receiving partner can put one leg over their partner’s shoulder or both legs over their hips,” explains certified sex and relationship coach Renée Hilliard, MD. (Fear not. The illustrations below are your friends.)

Once you get it right, the benefits are bountiful. “The penetration is deep and there is more clitoral stimulation,” says Bisbey, noting that the position works for all genders. It’s also a good face-to-face position. “The spork allows for eye contact, which may feel intimidating, but it can create a deeper intimate connection,” says Hilliard. “And the angle of penetration in this position can produce the sensation of increased girth if that’s something the receiving partner desires.”

Other bonuses? It doesn’t require a ton of strength or stamina for either partner, so it can work well for interabled couples. “It also gives the receiving partner a break from supporting their partner’s weight which can be a great choice with a larger partner, on a full stomach, or during pregnancy,” says Hilliard. (If you or your partner are pregnant, here are 20 pregnancy positions to carry you through three trimesters of sex.)

But best of all, if you’re among the practically-every-vulva-owner who needs clitoral stimulation to have an orgasm, the spork leaves your hands free for masturbation or a favorite toy.

Here’s how to get your spork on.

The Classic Spork

The person on the bottom lies on their back with one leg over their partner’s shoulder. The penetrating partner lies on their side and props themselves up on an elbow to enter from a sideways/perpendicular angle (again, picture = friend). “If the person on top holds onto the other person’s leg they can thrust deeper. A pillow under the bottom’s bum can also increase pleasure,” says Bisbey. A sex wedge works too.

The Foon

The receiver can flip both legs up over their partner’s hips for deeper penetration and easy access to masturbate or use a toy. It’s also a good view of what's going on for both parties. Everybody wins!

Ye Olde Spork

Before the "classic" spork, there was another version used by sporkers of yore. “Sporking traditionally meant when you're spooning and [one person] gets an erection and rubs it between [the other person's] butt cheeks,” explains Bisbey. (And good morning to you, too.) Said erection can stay between the cheeks or go in for penetration, anally or vaginally. If you have a vagina and are the little spoon, this might not do much for you sensation-wise, so have a toy(s) handy on the nightstand to press into service.
