Hi, is your relationship with sleep...shall we say...complicated? Like, are you pretty much always tired but can never fall asleep when it comes time to hit the hay? V relatable, friend. Maybe the problem is that you're sleeping on a foam mattress that's just too soft—or perhaps an innerspring mattress that's just too firm. Either way, it may be high time to introduce your bed to one of the best hybrid mattress options out there. Made with an innerspring support core and a foam comfort system, hybrid mattresses offer the best of both worlds, and we've rounded up all our faves for you to peruse.

In addition to providing an *ideal* mix of support and pressure relief, hybrid mattresses are known for their low heat retention, as the coil layers tend to promote airflow (unlike all-foam options). Likewise, while most modern innerspring mattresses contain both coil support cores and comfort layers, hybrid models rely on thicker comfort systems, which can be made with cushy foam or springy latex rubber, depending on your preference (and your budget, ofc). Here's a little sneak preview to get ya started:

Our top picks for the best hybrid mattresses of 2023:

What's the difference between a hybrid mattress and an innerspring mattress?

linebreak

Back in the day, innerspring mattresses used to have little to no comfort system, which is why people tend to write them off as creaky and uncomfy. However! Modern innerspring mattresses usually contain both coil support cores and comfort layers made with latex, polyfoam, or memory foam—which begs the question: What's the difference between innerspring and hybrid mattresses?

Because both mattress types combine springs with comfort layers, many manufacturers use the terms "innerspring" and "hybrid" interchangeably. But while hybrid models rely on thicker comfort systems (and usually come with higher price tags), innerspring beds tend to have relatively thin comfort layers. Generally speaking, if the comfort layer is greater than two inches thick, the mattress is considered a hybrid mattress rather than an innerspring.

Who are hybrid mattresses best for?

line break

Hybrid mattresses are best for people who don't want to be limited to sleeping on one type of mattress. Instead, they want to reap the benefits of multiple mattress types. So basically, hybrid mattresses are ideal for high-maintenance sleepers (hi, guilty as charged!) or partners with different sleep preferences.

They're also a good option for people who prefer a not-too-firm, not-too-soft, but juuuust right type of bed, as most hybrid mattresses are medium firm, as well as hot sleepers, since hybrid mattresses sleep cooler than all-foam models.

How much does a hybrid mattress cost?

linebreak

As your probs well aware, quality mattress aren't! cheap! And unfortunately, hybrid mattresses tend to be some of the most expensive ones out there. However, most of our favorite hybrid mattress options cost between $1,000 and $1,500 for a queen, and there are some cheap hybrid mattresses under $1,000 (and even under $500!) that are surprisingly great for the price.

Are hybrid mattresses durable?

linebreak

Because mattresses are a major investment, you'll wanna make sure that investment is made to last. And while the durability of a mattress depends on how it's manufactured, hybrid mattresses tend to fall in between all-foam mattresses and innerspring mattress in terms of how well they hold up over time, since steel springs > foam in terms of durability. Makes sense! Typically speaking, hybrid mattresses are made to last between seven and 10 years.

Ofc, the durability of a hybrid mattress def depends on the materials used for the comfort layers as well. Polyurethane foam (also known as poly foam) is the least expensive and lowest quality foam, as even high-density polyurethane foam is less dense than other foam materials. Memory foam is usually denser and more expensive than poly foam, while latex foam—especially natural latex foam—is the most durable (and typically the most expensive) mattress fill material.

What are the pros and cons of a hybrid mattress?

line break

Okay, let's break this down. Here are the pros and cons of a hybrid mattress.

Pros:

    • Durability and support: With a hybrid mattress, you'll get the support of a traditional spring mattress, as well as long-lasting durability because they have multiple layers of coils and foam.
    • Versatility: As we mentioned earlier, hybrid mattresses cater to a wide variety of sleeping preferences and body types.
    • Breathability: Hybrid mattresses are known for their low heat retention, as the coil layers tend to promote airflow.

    Cons:

    • Price: They tend to be expensive since you're essentially getting two different mattresses in one.
    • Bounciness: Much like a spring mattress, typical hybrid ones will transfer the movement of your partner or feel bouncy when you toss and turn. However!!! Hybrid mattress innovations like individually-wrapped coils can minimize this.
    • Weight and convenience: Hybrid mattresses are heavier than foam ones and can be a pain in the you-know-what to move.

How to choose the best hybrid mattress

    line break

    Read the reviews

Sleep preferences are suuuuper personal and often depend on your body type or weight. As a general rule of thumb, the heavier you are, the more likely you are to enjoy a firmer mattress. If you weigh under 130 pounds, for example, you'll probably prefer a plush memory foam mattress instead of a hybrid model, which folks who weigh over 230 pounds may to feel more comfortable with a firmer innerspring option. This is why it's important to find a review from someone with a similar body type and sleeping habits! If they love it, then there's a good chance you will, too.

    Consider your priorities

As we mentioned earlier, all hybrid mattresses feature a spring system that'll help your mattress last longer and provide support. But the comfort layers can vary and effect how you sleep—some feature soft memory foam, others have bouncy latex layers, and some have both! If you tend to sweat and need a bed that sleeps cool, choose one with a gel-infused foam or a latex rubber layer. If you have back or joint pain, consider purchasing a memory foam hybrid mattress. And if you sleep with a partner who tosses and turns, find one that features pocketed coils to minimize motion transfer.

Keep your sleep habits in mind

Your go-to sleep position should also influence your mattress pick. Side sleepers do best with medium-soft to medium-firm mattresses, while back sleepers should look for a medium-firm to firm mattress. And while stomach sleepers definitely do best with a firm mattress, combination sleepers will wanna invest in a medium-firm mattress (like most hybrids are!) that facilitates easy movement throughout the night.
