If you’re reading this, there’s a solid chance that you’re an incoming college freshman. And if that’s the case, I am so jealous. Call me cliche, but your college years really are some of the best years of your life—and the freshman dorm experience is at the root of it all, IMHO.
I mean, sure, there are a lot of ~less than ideal~ aspects of dorm life. (Shared bathrooms, crappy air conditioning, living in a glorified shoebox…you know the deal.) But getting your first taste of freedom while being steps away from friends that turn into family…I mean, that’s the stuff you’re going to miss once your degree is done and your diploma is framed. (Okay, I’m getting emotional. I’m gonna chill. ILY COLLEGE BESTIES.)
The point is, moving into your freshman dorm is exciting, and frankly, I’m excited for you. I also want to make sure that you make your room the absolute best it can be, because you’re gonna be spending a whooole lot of time within veeeery few square feet. When designing your dorm room, you’ve gotta put function over everything—but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it hella cute, too.
It’s all about maximizing the space you have, minimizing potential clutter, and enhancing the ambiance in your likely v drab space. You're gonna need useful and practical things like a mini-fridge, bed sheets that'll fit your new twin XL-sized dorm bed, and some wall art. This can all feel a lil overwhelming, I know, but don’t worry, I gotchu. I found the best of the best products you need to snag before move-in day, and compiled them all below. Scroll down to find alllll the dorm room essentials you shouldn’t head to college without.
Grab your girls and get ready to schhhhnuggle! Big Blanket Co. prides itself on selling the largest blankets in the world (10’ x 10’, to be exact), so there’s always plenty to go around on Bachelorette binge nights with the roomie(s). FYI, I have one and it’s one of the best things that's ever happened to me.

This velvet baby is chic and functional: Stacked up it acts as a comfy stool on wheels, then taken apart it doubles as three poufs perfect for visitors. Extra seating can be sparse in a dorm, and this cutie solves that problem in one, two, three.
I mean, where else are you supposed to showcase all your $3 Trader Joe’s wine? For real though, every home sweet home needs a bar cart, no matter how small. (And this one is cute and cheap.)
This isn’t your mom’s photo frame. Aura frames are smart digital frames controlled by an app on your phone. You can invite friends and family members to add their favorite snaps, then watch them go by all day long. What better way to keep up with what’s happenin’ back home?!
If you don’t have a caffeine addiction yet, chances are you will by the end of first semester. This glorious machine here is what keeps me human—it doubles as a kettle and frother and is also compatible with K-cups for when you’re feeling extra lazy.
Plants can bring life to any space—no matter how small, dark, and generally dorm-y. This cutie, called a ZZ plant for some adorable reason, is hella hard to kill (it doesn’t need much water or sun), making it perfect for a busy freshman like yourself.
This waterproof pouch is an essential addition to your school bag or backpack. Stuff it full of all your important items—notebooks, essays, IDs, special documents—to ensure they stay safe, clean, and dry on your way to and from campus.
One thing that’s always severely lacking in a dorm room? Closet space. That’s why this closet-rod extender is a godsend—it hooks onto your existing rod to create a second row underneath, helping you take advantage of allll the space.
You know you're gonna be storing all the snacks and drinks you can get your hands on. Put 'em in this spacious mini-fridge that can hold a lot of half-eaten sammies and Snack Packs.
