Taylor Swift is giving us so much this summer. A global tour! A re-release of Speak Now! A lesson on forgiving (or just forgetting) sh*tty exes! I could go on and on. In addition to all that, I couldn’t help but notice that she’s also giving us a master class on perfecting the ultimate casual summertime wardrobe.
In between tour dates and bestie hangouts, she’s been spotted putting in the hours at the studio, and during those brief moments when she’s papped going in and out of where the magic is made, she’s shown us all how to dress during the swampy, humid hellscape season that is a New York summer (she forgot to mention in “WTNY” that when we first dropped our bags on apartment floors, it was because we were in the middle of experiencing heat exhaustion).
Her latest—and, IMO, greatest—recording outfit consisted of an oversized button-up, preppy flared skirt, white socks, hoops, and loafers. Not only does she construct the perfect bridge, but also the perfect summer capsule collection. What can’t she do?
More From Cosmopolitan
It took all of three seconds (more or less) for me to recreate her outfit, and it will probs be a super easy moment for you, too. Here’s how I did (aka Summer’s Version):
If you're looking to dupe Taylor's outfit too, here are all the pieces you'll need.
Step 1: Grab a dad hat
Keep the baseball cap simple. It’s basically just functioning to cover up your unwashed sweaty hair. Nike’s simple tech version comes in so many colors and is under $25, so you can’t beat it.
I wore this one from Vuori and it covered up my messy hair perfectly.
Step 2: Throw on an oversize button-up
The vibes are easy and breezy, so grab a lightweight button-up top (wrinkles are totally chill in this case). As the one true Miss Americana, Taylor went with a classic pinstripe top, like this $27 one from Amazon.
My go-to is and always will be the Aritzia Wilfred top.
Step 3: Pull on a swishy skirt
Grab a skirt that has just enough volume to it—one that'll stick out from under your oversized button-up. This one from Athleta looks super similar to what Miss Swift donned, plus it’s made of sweat-wicking material that’ll come in handy during those hot-as-hell summer days.
I wore this version from the brand because I wanted a pop of color during a very gray day.
Step 4: Accessorize with hoops
Taylor knows to never underestimate the power of a simple, thin hoop earring. The subtle addition took her look from school uniform to academia chic.
I have famously lost every pair of hoops I’ve ever owned so I wore these black studs that I never take off.
Step 5. Add on your fave prep school-approved shoes
You can’t exude Preppy Girl Summer if you don’t have a pair of wear-anywhere loafers that you can fling on before heading out the door. Taylor’s simple black lace-ups are rather unique, but these ASOS ones come super close to looking like replicas.
Sometimes I don't feel like squeezing my feet into a pair of heavy leather shoes. So I opted for my go-to pair of Mary Janes from Amazon.
Step 6. Complete the look with cute ankle socks
Ever the perfectionist, Taylor knows that every detail matters, including the socks. Hers had a frilly detail on them that really brought the whole look together.
I am perfect at one thing and that’s finding a bargain. So, I wore a pair of socks that were, like, $3 and came in a pack of six.
There you have it. Now go stream “Cruel Summer” and have a fabulous one!
